Laser Cutters are fantastic machines, they’re incredibly precise and can cut through, engrave into or etch on top of most anything you can imagine (that isn’t super toxic) like Wood, Plastic, Foam, Rubber, Textiles, Leather, Stone, Metal, Glass, even Fig Newtons etc. are just a few from a very long list. However – we are only able to mark on metals, not cut through them as it requires a very different laser & operating environment.
Much more than an efficient way to personalize an object, laser cutters are an extremely advantageous manufacturing tool that can produce precision components or intricate artwork. Even better, you don’t have to be a graphic designer to use one with us. We can engrave a simple digital image or create cut-out profiles from hand drawn silhouette artwork. However, if you want to make the most of the potential the machine offers you would use Vector graphic art software such as Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw, or other CAD programs. We use AI CS6 and Rhino3D as native software in our shop.
We’re happy to advise you on design/layout considerations for efficiency if you send us a file. We’ll have an additional informational .pdf available on our File Prep page soon so you can study up on the concepts if you desire to learn more about the details and designing for efficiency.
Generally speaking we can laser cut most materials up to 1/4″ or 3/8″ depending. Leather, and cork are limited to 1/8″ and 3/16″ thickness respectively. Acrylic cuts very well up to .375″ and can even go up to 0.5″.
Some materials may be etched or engraved onto but not cut through like glass, stone or anodized aluminum.
We don’t want to limit what you can imagine but here’s some common uses:
- Cutting Textile Design Patterns
- Precision Woodworking
- Woodblock Prints
- Model Building
- Lamps and Furniture
- Retail Displays
